As a health professional, you are probably already familiar with PEP after occupational exposure. More recently, PEP has been available under strict prescribing guidelines to people who might have been exposed to HIV during sex.
This section offers support and online training to help you meet the needs of gay men requesting PEP in your area.
In 2006 the Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson wrote to all Primary Care Trusts stating the PEP should be made available as part of a wider HIV prevention strategy. You can download a copy of this letter here.
The Sector Summary Report, updated in November 2006, is now available for download as a PDF. The PEP SSR has been updated and expanded to include all minor changes to the programme's message since the last reprint in 2005. It also contains information regarding PEP for people seeking PEP after heterosexual exposure due to the campaign targeting African communities being launched for the first time in parallel to the gay men's relaunch.
'PEP talk' report
A major evaluative report by Sigma Research is also available which presents the findings of a study into gay men?s awareness and access to PEP. PEP talk - awareness of, and access to post-exposure prophylaxis among Gay & Bisexual men in the UK shows appropriate data from GMSS and analyses information gleaned from one-on-one interviews with gay men who tried to access PEP. The report is available from Sigma Research's website - www.sigmaresearch.org.uk - or can be downloaded here.
