Please remember that a doctor will not necessarily automatically prescribe PEP to someone who has been (or thinks they have been) exposed to HIV. The doctor will make a decision based on strict prescribing criteria and after making a judgement of the likely risks.
If you think you need PEP urgently:
- Call your local sexual health clinic (also called GUM clinics) and ask to speak to a health advisor or nurse. Tell them you think you need PEP and ask them if they are able to offer it to you. To find the sexual health clinic nearest to you, click here
- If it is outside of the clinic's opening times (for example, evenings or weekends) it might be possible to get PEP from a nearby A&E department. To find your nearest accident and emergency department, click here. A&E departments attached to a hospital with an HIV unit are more likely to be able to offer PEP. We strongly recommend that you take the downloadable factsheet with you to A&E - the reception staff might not know who to refer you to.
PEP should be available from sexual health clinics and hospital accident and emergency departments but many men say they have had difficulty obtaining PEP from these places, especially outside metropolitan areas. You are more likely to be successful if you enquire at a sexual health clinic or A&E in a hospital where there is also a specialist HIV clinic. The following sexual health clinics are known to have procedures in place to offer PEP. We strongly recommend that you telephone the clinic and ask to speak to a nurse or health advisor before visiting. They will advise you on what you should do next.
